Novedad Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Título: Rhyming Life & Death [Haruzei Hahayim Vehamavet]
Autor: Amos Oz
Número de páginas: 120
Editorial: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Fecha original de publicación: 2007
País: Israel
ISBN: 978-0151013678
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Booklist) "In this work of precision satire, Oz, one of Israel’s most prominent writers, portrays a prominent Israeli writer, The Author, and cannily mocks the celebrity status writers acquire. What does a writer know? Why trust him? Stories, after all, possess strange, even dangerous powers. This particular Author is enthralled by his rogue imagination. He’s late to his reading at the 'refurbished Shunia Shor and the Seven Victims of the Quarry Attack Cultural Center' because a waitress’ derriere sparks his storytelling impulse, and soon the reader becomes wholly engrossed in her disastrous love affair. Finally onstage, The Author begins to make up stories about people in the audience, all the while wondering about the fate of the revered poet everyone insists on quoting. Hilarious and profound, Oz’s tale of a mischievous tale-teller ponders the eroticism of stories and the mysterious ways language and literature bridge the divide between inner and outer worlds; and it helps us make some sense, however gossamer, of life and death. A slyly philosophical novel."

Novedad Yale University Press

Título: Gerhard Richter: Portraits
Autor: Paul Moorhouse
Número de páginas: 176
Editorial: Yale University Press
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Alemania
ISBN: 978-0300151596
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "'Appearance, semblance is the theme of my life.' This statement by Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) suggests the importance of portraiture to his career. One of the greatest artists working today, Richter has been intensively engaged with portraiture since 1962. His portraits invite critical consideration of both portraiture and painting; they include images of specific people—whether sensational subjects of people in the media, icons of the popular imagination, or close friends and relatives. However, all are transformed when Richter puts them onto canvas, for they often become anonymous in the process or become significant simply for being included. Richter’s investigation into how we understand what surrounds us is at the heart of all his work.
In this large-scale book—ideal for Richter’s portraits—Paul Moorhouse offers a major advance in the understanding and appreciation of the renowned artist’s work. With keen insight, Moorhouse studies the portraits in close detail, examining the sophisticated ways in which Richter has challenged and extended the genre of portraiture and revealing the startling range of the artist’s source material.
Featuring never-before-published images, this book clearly eclipses any previous publication on Richter’s portraiture.

Novedad Harper Perennial

Título: Ugly Man
Autor: Dennis Cooper
Número de páginas: 272
Editorial: Harper Perennial
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0061715440
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "The cult novelist's collection of short stories plumbs veins of dark humor amid the sex and gore his fans have come to expect. The contents range from short shorts—a rumination on The Fifteen Worst Russian Gay Porn Web Sites and an abortive episode entitled One Night in 1979 I Did Too Much Coke and Couldn't Sleep and Had What I Thought Was a Million-Dollar Idea to Write the Definitive Tell-all Book About Glam Rock Based on My Own Personal Experience but This Is as Far as I Got—to longer pieces in which sadistic male characters explore their preoccupations with the murder, mutilation and rape of nihilistic teenaged boys. Stories of the latter group often feature text pared down to dialogue alone or resembling scripts complete with stage directions. The lighter fare, such as it is, provides much needed comic relief, as in the case of The Anal-Retentive Line Editor, which proceeds through interstitial edits upon a series of drafts of a piece of gay erotica, forming a running conversation and problematic seduction between author and editor. This is classic Cooper: explicit, unconventional and, to the uninitiated, alarming."

Título: Diferencias
Autor: Goran Petrović
Número de páginas: 172
Editorial: Sexto Piso
Fecha original de publicación: 2008
País: Serbia
ISBN: 978-9685679657

Novedad Picador

Título: A Better Angel
Autor: Chris Adrian
Número de páginas: 240
Editorial: Picador
Fecha original de publicación: 2008
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0312428532
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "The author of Gob's Grief and The Children's Hospital returns with a sublime collection of nine stories whose wide assortment of characters, many of them children, fugue around death, are plagued by remembrance of things past and are possessed by violence. In Stab, a young protagonist whose twin died, joins a little girl in a killing spree of neighborhood animals, eventually setting their sights on larger prey. A woman who tries to commit suicide in The Sum of Our Parts wanders hospital halls as an astral projection, witnessing the unexpressed desires of her friends in pathology. And a Juno-esque teen, a hospital regular with short-gut syndrome, writes an animal book of sublimated child-ward life: bunnies with high colonic ruin, cats with leukemic indecisiveness and monkeys with chronic kidney doom. The story Why Antichrist? gives us two teenagers who have each lost parents, one to 9/11 (which looms large in the collection); the devil is soon literally between the teens. With heartbreaking imagination, Adrian illuminates how people act out their grief on their own bodies and the bodies of others, and enter the world of the spirit in the process."

Novedad Anagrama

Título: El material humano
Autor: Rodrigo Rey Rosa
Número de páginas: 192
Editorial: Anagrama
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Guatemala
ISBN: 978-8433971913

Novedad Bitter Lemon Press

Título: The Vampire of Ropraz [Le Vampire de Ropraz]
Autor: Jacques Chessex
Traducción de: Donald Wilson
Número de páginas: 106
Editorial: Bitter Lemon Press
Fecha original de publicación: 2007
País: Suiza
ISBN: 978-1904738336
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "Inspired by a true story, Chessex's crime novella offers a sobering appraisal of human superstition and prejudice. In 1903, the ghoulish desecration of several women's graves in the rural Swiss village of Ropraz leads locals to intuit a vampire's handiwork. Suspicion falls on Charles-Augustin Favez, a brutish farmhand with a history of alcoholism and lewd behavior. Though no accusations hold up against him in court, Favez is imprisoned: he makes the perfect defenseless scapegoat onto whom citizens in the backward community project their own shameful secrets. In measured prose that studiously sidesteps sensationalism, Chessex (L'Ogre) recounts the alternating repulsion and fascination that Favez stimulates in the many persons involved with his case, all of whom vampirically exploit him to satisfy their own needs. The book concludes with a wonderfully mordant speculation on Favez's fate after he escapes prison and joins the French army during WWI."

Novedad Alfaguara

Título: El viajero del siglo
Autor: Andrés Neuman
Número de páginas: 544
Editorial: Alfaguara
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Argentina / España
ISBN: 978-8420422350

Upbeat to the Leisure City
Autor: MVRDV
Número de páginas: 260
Editorial: Actar
Fecha original de publicación: 2000
País: Holanda
ISBN: 978-8495273192
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "The Spanish coastal area has become a tremendous economic success. In 50 years it has turned into the densest 'city' in Europe due to a series of attractions that are lacking elsewhere: sun, sea, food, freedom, cheapness. But despite these huge advantages, it is condemned for its monocular behaviour, for its lack of history, taste and culture, its total ignorance of ecological responsibility. This controversy freezes its potential rather than activates it. What should be done with this paradoxical phenomenon that balances between disgust and charm, between attraction and repulsion?"

Novedad NYRB Classics

Título: Don't Look Now
Autora: Daphne du Maurier
Número de páginas: 368
Editorial: NYRB Classics
Fecha original de publicación: 2008
País: Reino Unido
ISBN: 978-1590172889
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "Daphne du Maurier wrote some of the most compelling and creepy novels of the twentieth century. In books like Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and Jamaica Inn she transformed the small dramas of everyday life—love, grief, jealousy—into the stuff of nightmares. Less known, though no less powerful, are her short stories, in which she gave free rein to her imagination in narratives of unflagging suspense.
Patrick McGrath’s revelatory new selection of du Maurier’s stories shows her at her most chilling and most psychologically astute: a dead child reappears in the alleyways of Venice; routine eye surgery reveals the beast within to a meek housewife; nature revolts against man’s abuse by turning a benign species into an annihilating force; a dalliance with a beautiful stranger offers something more dangerous than a broken heart. McGrath draws on the whole of du Maurier’s long career and includes surprising discoveries together with famous stories like “The Birds.”
Don’t Look Now is a perfect introduction to a peerless storyteller."

Novedad Candlewick

Título: The Uninvited
Autor: Tim Wynne-Jones
Número de páginas: 368
Editorial: Candlewick
Fecha original de publicación: 2008
País: Canadá/ Reino Unido
ISBN: 978-0763639846
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Booklist) "After a stormy affair with a professor, NYU student Mimi Shapiro heads to a remote Canadian farmhouse owned by her father, Marc, a famous painter. On arrival in the idyllic riverside setting, though, she finds Jay, a 22-year-old musician, already ensconced in the house. Jay, she discovers, is her half-brother, and he welcomes her into his comfortable life with his mother and her lesbian partner. Readers learn long before the newfound siblings, however, that Marc fathered another child: Cramer, a twentysomething loner who supports his mentally unstable mother. Is he the sole intruder who stalks and then breaks into the river house? The distance between what readers and characters know creates the story’s central coil of tension, and Wynne-Jones adds extra measures of creepiness in teen-movie scenes of vulnerable Mimi, alone and threatened in the house, and in the flashes of sexual attraction that the half-siblings share. The mystery’s violent conclusion will shock many, but it’s Wynne-Jones’ atmospheric prose and sophisticated exploration of elemental coming-of-age themes that will involve readers most."

Título: Trauma
Autor: Patrick McGrath
Número de páginas: 240
Editorial: Vintage
Fecha original de publicación: 2008
País: Reino Unido
ISBN: 978-1400075492
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "McGrath (Port Mungo) manipulates reader expectations expertly in this sharp-edged psychological study of a man deluded by his personal demons. Charlie Weir, a Manhattan psychiatrist, applies the life skills the members of his badly dysfunctional family have helped him hone to counseling patients with post-traumatic stress disorder. While everyone else he knows appears in danger of spinning out of orbit, Charlie exudes the calmness and confidence of a man in control of his circumstances. But he's unable to connect emotionally with the women in his life, and he repeatedly revisits his memory of the suicide of his ex-wife's brother, who was also one of his patients. With painstaking precision, McGrath drives this story to a climactic, if hastily resolved, moment of self-revelation in which Charlie uncovers a forgotten personal trauma that has perverted his perceptions and made him the most unreliable of narrators. Notwithstanding these efforts to give Charlie's tale the jolt of a psychological thriller, this is a haunting story of a man in the grip of a painful and beautifully articulated spiritual malaise."

Título: Green Architecture Now!
Editores: Philip Jodidio
Número de páginas: 416
Editorial: Taschen
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-3836503723
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "These days, green is the name of the game. There has never been so much interest in the ecological impact of buildings as there is today. This is not a negligible fact in the struggle to control pollution and in the search for responsible 'sustainable' methods of construction. Buildings are among the heaviest consumers of natural resources and account for a significant portion of the greenhouse gas emissions that affect climate change. With global warming now a significant international political issue, architecture itself is on the brink of significant changes, where style and matters of aesthetics are placed in a secondary position behind issues of sustainability. At a certain time, 'green' buildings were ugly and complicated affairs, usually multicolored as though an entire rainbow in one building might be sufficient to prove a concern for ecology. This is surely no longer the case as buildings published in this current volume demonstrate. However, it may be that green architecture is not so much about architecture as it is about survival; the aesthetics of the architecture are secondary considerations when it comes to finally stopping the war with nature that has resulted in the creation of the asphalt jungle. Well-known architects from Tadao Ando to Thom Mayne figure in this book, but so too do many others that are far less famous today, but perhaps the stars of tomorrow. Título: Black Hole
Autor: Charles Burns
Número de páginas: 368
Editorial: Pantheon
Fecha original de publicación: 1993-2004
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0375714726
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "The prodigiously talented Burns hit the comics scene in the '80s via Raw magazine, wielding razor-sharp, ironic-retro graphics. Over the years his work has developed a horrific subtext perpetually lurking beneath the mundane suburban surface. In the dense, unnerving Black Hole, Burns combines realism—never a concern for him before—and an almost convulsive surrealism. The setting is Seattle during the early '70s. A sexually transmitted disease, the "bug," is spreading among teenagers. Those who get it develop bizarre mutations—sometimes subtle, like a tiny mouth at the base of one boy's neck, and sometimes obvious and grotesque. The most visibly deformed victims end up living as homeless campers in the woods, venturing into the streets only when they have to, shunned by normal society. The story follows two teens, Keith and Chris, as they get the bug. Their dreams and hallucinations—made of deeply disturbing symbolism merging sexuality and sickness—are a key part of the tale. The AIDS metaphor is obvious, but the bug also amplifies already existing teen emotions and the wrenching changes of puberty. Burns's art is inhumanly precise, and he makes ordinary scenes as creepy as his nightmare visions of a world where intimacy means a life worse than death."

Título: Inventing Marcel Duchamp
Editores: Anne Collins Goodyear, James W. McManus
Número de páginas: 308
Editorial: The MIT Press
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0262013000
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) was a master of self-invention who carefully regulated the image he projected through self-portraiture and through his collaboration with those who portrayed him. During his long career, Duchamp recast accepted modes for assembling and describing identity, indelibly altering the terrain of portraiture. This groundbreaking book (which accompanies a major exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery) demonstrates the ways in which Duchamp willfully manipulated the techniques of portraiture both to secure his reputation as an iconoclast and to establish himself as a major figure in the art world.
Although scholars have explored Duchamp's use of aliases, little attention has been paid to how this work played into, and against, existing portrait conventions. Nor has any study yet compared these explicitly self-constructed projects with the large body of portraits of Duchamp by others.
Inventing Marcel Duchamp showcases approximately one hundred never-before-assembled portraits and self-portraits of Duchamp. The (broadly defined) self-portraits and self-representations include the famous autobiographical suitcase Boîte-en-Valise and Self-Portrait in Profile, a torn silhouette that became very influential for future generations of artists. The portraits by other artists include works by Duchamp's contemporaries Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Francis Picabia, Beatrice Wood, and Florine Stettheimer as well as portraits by more recent generations of artists, including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Sturtevant, Yasumasa Morimura, David Hammons, and Douglas Gordon.
Since the mid-twentieth century, as abstraction assumed a position of dominance in fine art, portraiture has been often derided as an art form; the images and essays in
Inventing Marcel Duchamp counter this, and invite us to rethink the role of portraiture in modern and contemporary art."

Número de páginas: 240
Editorial: Hatje Cantz
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Alemania
ISBN: 978-3775722230
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "The members of J. Mayer H. Architects, founded in Berlin in 1996 by Jurgen Mayer, have already won a number of awards for their extraordinary work--for example, their very first building won the Mies van der Rohe Emerging Architect Prize in 2003. Their structures bulge and pop inorganically in a style that aims to go, as Mayer puts it, beyond the blob." In recent years the firm has created a furor with attention-getting buildings such as the new commons for the Universitat Karlsruhe, the ADA 1 offices in Hamburg and the Metropol Parasol, a gigantic structure for the marketplace in the heart of old Seville. Edited by Henry Urbach, this is the first book to present J. Mayer H. Architects' entire oeuvre, tracking the firm's constructions from the research stage through design to project development and culminating in the actual building itself."

Número de páginas: 368
Editorial: Tor Books
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0765321619
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "In this gripping dystopian satire, ex-marine Sargent Whitmore has a plan to make millions while protecting children from the self-destructing modern world. He turns an old Mediterranean monastery into a combined impenetrable fortress and school, and enrolls 100 filthy-rich children, most of them already well-known for legal troubles, drug problems and paparazzi run-ins. Once there, everyone is cut off from the outside world, fed only canned news stories about wars and natural disasters. When things inevitably go horribly wrong, young hacker "Killer" Stade, physician assistant Cassie, drug and sex-crazed Sylvie and monastery-raised orphan Benny all attempt heroics, but remain deeply flawed. Reed (The Baby Merchant) displays unflinching willingness to explore all the facets of all of the characters, and her refusal to paint anyone as a simple villain makes this far more than a typical disaster novel."

Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0393067965
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "Meno (Hairstyles of the Damned) continues to employ his keen observations of human nature, this time exploring the tumultuous landscapes of a contemporary Chicago family. The narrative rotates between members of the Casper family, giving each time and space to dig into their respective quirks. Jonathan, the father, is a scientist caught in a quest for a prehistoric squid and is prone to seizures at the sight of clouds. Madeline, Jonathan's wife, also a scientist, studies the behavior of her murderous lab pigeons and is distressed by the growing distance between family members: elder daughter Amelia is a teenage anticapitalist crusader already becoming weary of the fight; youngest daughter Thisbe's desire to find God is met with much concern from her atheist parents; grandfather Henry's sole desire is to make himself disappear. As the family's preoccupations rattle on and bang up against one another, the recently begun war in Iraq provides background noise and another dimension to the intricate and intimate tale. Meno's handle on the written word is fresh and inviting, conjuring a story that delves deeply into the human heart."

Número de páginas: 330
Editorial: Quercus
Fecha original de publicación: 2008
País: Colombia
ISBN: 978-1847244857
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.co.uk) "Unquestionably one of the most important Latin American novels of the last few years - El Universal. ...a timeless epic...which intends to bear witness to the madness of a country adrift in the crossfire - El Pais. ... discomfiting evocation of the turmoil wrought on ordinary lives by conflict ... heart-wrenching - Metro. It is a story of horror and despair, beautifully told - Standpoint Magazine. The Armies is a swift and engaging piece of prose. In Anne McLean's fine translation, often beautifully rhythmic and economical, Ismael's voice brings the reader into the heart of the human experience - Evelio Rosero's book is all the more powerful for it - The Independent. Rosero's ability to depict vulnerability and insanity is unrivalled, and his style favours precision over description. He has that ability that distinguishes great writers: an ability to peer into the human heart. The result is a well-grounded narrative form with a strong sense of direction that carries the reader on its shoulders almost effortlessly - Latin American Review of Books. Rosero succeeds in bringing his characters to a human level that recalls Philip Roth's protagonists' physical degradation and the moral abyss depicted by J.M. Coetzee...A great achievement - El Periodico. An extremely polished novel that pulls readers into a sweet story that turns sour - Criticas."

País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0312420130
Sinopsis: (Tomada de The New Republic) "Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor was the first to point out the accusatory side of the metaphors of empowerment that seek to enlist the patient's will to resist disease. It is largely as a result of her work that the how-to health books avoid the blame-ridden term 'cancer personality' and speak more soothingly of 'disease-producing lifestyles' . . . AIDS and Its Metaphors extends her critique of cancer metaphors to the metaphors of dread surrounding the AIDS virus. Taken together, the two essays are an exemplary demonstration of the power of the intellect in the face of the lethal metaphors of fear."

Autora: Carrie Ryan
Número de páginas: 320
Editorial: Delacorte Books
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
ISBN: 978-0385736817
País: Estados Unidos
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Booklist) "Mary lives in a small village in the middle of the forest governed by the religious Sisterhood and bordered with a fence to keep out the Unconsecrated—a horde of the undead unleashed many generations ago by a mysterious and cataclysmic event. Life is simple but preordained; Mary fears her betrothal to a man she doesn’t love almost as much as the hungry jaws slavering at the fence links. Under the colonial trappings, this is a full-blooded zombie thriller, reminiscent of the paragon of the genre, George Romero’s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. Soon Mary and a small band of desperate survivors are thrown together to outwit the undead and work through their own weaknesses, suspicions, and jealousies. Ryan’s vision is bleak but not overly gory; her entry in the zombie canon stands out for how well she integrates romance with flesh-eating. The plot loses a little wind near the conclusion, but Ryan’s ability to write a nail-biting escape scene will keep most readers riveted."

Autora: Chloe Aridjis
Número de páginas: 209
Editorial: Grove Press
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
ISBN: 978-0802170569
País: Estados Unidos
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "Book of Clouds is a haunting, masterfully wrought debut novel about a young woman adrift in Berlin, where a string of fateful encounters leads to romance, violence, and revelation. Having escaped her overbearing family a continent away, Tatiana settles in Berlin and cultivates solitude while distancing herself from the city’s past. Yet the phantoms of Berlin—seeping in through the floorboards of her apartment, lingering in the abandoned subterranea—are more alive to her than the people she passes on her daily walks. When she takes a job transcribing notes for the reclusive historian Doktor Weiss, her life in Berlin becomes more complex—and more perilous. Through Weiss, she meets Jonas, a meteorologist who, as a child in the GDR, took solace in the sky’s constant shape-shifting, an antidote to his grim and unyielding reality. As their three paths intersect and merge, the contours of all their worlds change, culminating in an act of violence that will leave none of them untouched. Unfolding with the strange, charged logic of a dream, Book of Clouds is a profound portrait of a city forever in flux, and of the myths we cling to in order to give shape to our lives."

ISBN: 978-0385527651

Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "In what Whitehead describes as his Autobiographical Fourth Novel (as opposed to the more usual autobiographical first novel), the author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist John Henry Days explores the in-between space of adolescence through one boy's summer in a predominantly black Long Island neighborhood. Benji and Reggie, brothers so closely knit that many mistake them for twins, have been coming out to Sag Harbor for as long as they can remember. For Benji, each three-month stay at Sag is a chance to catch up with friends he doesn't see the rest of the year, and to escape the social awkwardness that comes with a bad afro, reading Fangoria, and being the rare African-American student at an exclusive Manhattan prep school. As he and Reggie develop separate identities and confront new factors like girls, part-time jobs and car-ownership, Benji struggles to adapt to circumstances that could see him joining the ranks of Those Who Don't Come Out Anymore. Benji's funny and touching story progresses leisurely toward Labor Day, but his reflections on what's gone before provide a roadmap to what comes later, resolving social conflicts that, at least this year, have yet to explode."

Título: Architecture Now! Houses
Autor: Philip Jodidio
Número de páginas: 416
Editorial: Taschen
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-3836503747
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "Though there may be distinctions between a house and a home, the fact remains that the fundamental ideas of shelter, life and death are intertwined with the architecture of the commonplace in every dwelling, from cave to castle. The house can be a measure of civilization, wealth or, indeed, intelligence; it is a barometer of existence. Depending on the architect and the client, a house can be at the very cutting edge of architecture, casting aside notions of the past in search of a new paradigm; it can accept the rules of urbanism while standing them on their head. It can float in the air or emerge from the depths of the earth. Where factors of cost may limit civic architecture to tried and trusted methods, some houses break all the rules, and help architecture to move forward. This book is not about decoration, nor is it a practical guide to building one's own house. It is, rather, a search that may lead the willing reader from Patagonia in Argentina to the cliffs of Dover Heights, Australia to see some of the most remarkable houses built in the past five years."

Autor: Isaí Moreno
Número de páginas: 224
Editorial: Joaquín Mortiz
Fecha original de publicación: 2004
País: México
ISBN: 968270958X

Autor: Perry Hall
Número de páginas: 210
Editorial: Wet Media Group
Fecha original de publicación: 2008
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0615261591
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "Painter Perry Hall uses a set of experimental techniques that draw upon the organizing principles found in nature. In his Decalcomania paintings, he uses pressure to shape complex networks of interlocking lines and ridges of paint into organic compositions that evoke the notion of 'growing' a painting. In his Livepaintings (time-based paintings), he stimulates paint with temperature changes, vibration, turbulence, and various substances, transforming paint flows into compositions he captures onto video. In the Sound Drawings, sound waves are channeled into a vessel containing oil or acrylics: Hall paints by changing the qualities of the sound, in effect, 'playing' the paint like a musical instrument. His innovative paintings are a fascinating and beautiful collaboration with "material intelligence" and a meditation on the dynamics found in nature. Over 190 full-color reproductions."

Título: The Love We Share Without Knowing
Autor: Christopher Barzak
Número de páginas: 304
Editorial: Bantam
Fecha original de publicación: 2008
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0553385649
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "Barzak's accomplished novel-in-stories dwells on people dealing with life's sorrows through somewhat tenuous connections. Set in Japan, the narratives focus on protagonists from the country and travelers in search of a new life, as in Realer Than You, in which 16-year-old Elijah Fulton longs for his native America while struggling to fit into his new surroundings outside of Tokyo. The Suicide Club is made up of four young adults on the fringe of Japanese society attempting to make sense of their lives, while Sleeping Beauties concerns, albeit sappily, an American teacher and his Japanese lover; the narrator loses his identity through total immersion in his lover's life, yet it's the slow return to self that is even more devastating. If You Can Read This You're Too Close centers on a disillusioned, selfish young man whose life is changed after a blind man sees him. Barzak's perceptive writing evinces the fragile and overwhelming desire for meaning and love."

Título: Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall
Autor: Kazuo Ishiguro
Número de páginas: 240
Editorial: Faber and Faber
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Reino Unido
ISBN: 978-0571244980
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.co.uk) "In a sublime story cycle, Kazuo Ishiguro explores ideas of love, music and the passing of time. From the piazzas of Italy to the Malvern Hills, a London flat to the 'hush-hush floor' of an exclusive Hollywood hotel, the characters we encounter range from young dreamers to cafe musicians to faded stars, all of them at some moment of reckoning. Gentle, intimate and witty, this quintet is marked by a haunting theme: the struggle to keep alive a sense of life's romance, even as one gets older, relationships flounder and youthful hopes recede."

Novedad Solaris

Título: Poe: 18 New Tales Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe
Autores: Gregory Frost, Pat Cadigan, Sharyn McRumb, Kim Newman, Lucius Shepard, M. Rickert, John Langan, Delia Sherman, etc.
Editado por: Ellen Datlow
Número de páginas: 352
Editorial: Solaris
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Reino Unido, Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-1844165957
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "This anthology's title notwithstanding, the 19 original stories commissioned for it seem largely devoid of the Poe principle. Kim Newman (Illimitable Domain) contributes a gleefully subversive alternate history in which Poe movie adaptations take over American culture; John Langan (Technicolor) offers an incisive deconstruction of Poe's Masque of the Red Death that also functions as a magnificently creepy horror tale; and Delia Sherman (The Red Piano) proffers a horror romance whose villain is clearly modeled on Poe's sound-sensitive Roderick Usher. For the most part, however, readers will have to work toward the explanatory note each author provides at the story's end to see which Poesque resonance he or she intended. Still, Datlow (Inferno) has assembled an all-star lineup and chosen inventive stories whose quality are certainly an extension of Poe's tradition of excellent weird fiction."

Título: Wrong
Autor: Dennis Cooper
Número de páginas: 176
Editorial: Grove Press
Fecha original de publicación: 1992
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0802133670
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.barnesandnoble.com) "A first short-story collection by novelist-poet Cooper (Frisk ; The Tenderness of Wolves), this book is relentlessly unpleasant if skillfully written. Cooper's obsessions--serial killers, drugged-out male hustlers, abusive gay relationships--run through the collection like the chorus of a particularly nihilistic rock song. Characters--a Jeffrey Dahmer-type murderer of teenage boys, the members of a semi-pro rock band called Horror Hospital--recur intermittently, but situations are repeated incessantly. With its reduction of gay life to an endless round of rough sex and drugs bracketed by violent death, Cooper's work is a tawdry throwback to a time before AIDS. He has an uncanny eye for the nasty metaphor: 'A boy's shaved head was just visible inside one end of a rolled-up carpet like the fruit of a Chapstick.'' Cooper's craftsmanship is undeniable, although he could be talking about himself when he has the narrator of 'Square One'' observe that 'the sharpest new writers tend to appropriate either the language or sheen of pornography.'' His is a profoundly disturbing book, as much for its detached tones and sense of ennui as for the acts it so graphically depicts."

Novedad Prime Books

Título: Mr. Gaunt and other Uneasy Encounters
Autor: John Langan
Número de páginas: 256
Editorial: Prime Books
Fecha original de publicación: 2008
País: Estados Unidos
ISBN: 978-0809572496
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "As Elizabeth Hand aptly observes in her introduction to this exceptional debut horror collection, Langan's tales celebrate supernatural fiction's antiquarian and visionary past with as much eloquence and acuity—and terror—as they explore the dark heart of the 21st century. The richly atmospheric title story evokes the weird fiction of both Henry James and M.R. James in its account of a family cursed with a demonic familiar with a ravenous appetite for disobedient children. On 'Skua Island,' a relentlessly creepy monster story, pits a team of modern espionage operatives against an implacable creature of the living dead out of Norse legend. The five tales run the gamut from supernatural satire ('Tutorial') to apocalyptic nightmare ('Episode Seven'), but whatever their theme or tone, Langan shows uncommon skill at balancing character, plot and mood to achieve the perfect pitch for each. Horror readers will welcome a new voice speaking in a classic tongue."

ISBN: 978-0765315373
Sinopsis: (Tomada de Publishers Weekly) "Wondrous worlds await U.S. SF fans in this sensitively chosen, impeccably translated anthology of Continental European science fiction stories, ranging from 1987 to 2005. Offering 'emotional satisfaction and cerebral excitement,' as James Morrow puts it in his introduction, highlights include Johanna Sinisalo's 'Baby Doll,' a Finnish denunciation of materialistic exploitation of children; Romanian Lucian Merisca's 'Some Earthlings' Adventures on Outrerria,' an excruciating political satire; Valerio Angelisti's 'Sepultura,' which offers a neo-Dantean Infernoscape; and W.J. Maryson's 'Verstummte Musik,' a Dutch near-future Orwellian nightmare. A French twist on human-machine interface lifts Jean-Claude Dunyach's 'Separations' into a meditation on the nature of artistic creativity, while Elena Arsenieva's 'A Birch Tree, a White Fox' exquisitely illustrates the quintessential Russian soul. These 'disciplined speculations' by European writers and their painstaking translators not only excite the mind, they move the heart."

Novedad Walther Konig

Título: Gerhard Richter: Wald
Autor: Gerhard Richter
Número de páginas: 396
Editorial: Walther Konig
Fecha original de publicación: 2009
País: Alemania
ISBN: 978-3865605030
Sinopsis: (Tomada de www.amazon.com) "Gerhard Richter has been taking photographs in the dense forest near his Cologne home since 2005. This complex artist's book features 285 of these stunning, almost abstract images, sorted loosely into groups--delicate branches, horizontal logs, diagonally growing trees--and interspersed with German text from a forestry magazine, all the words of which have been shuffled by means of a random generator and then edited to remove any overly explicit names or passages--although the resulting absurd text can still be recognized as a commentary on forest issues. Further, Richter divides the text into seven horizontal strips that run through the book, arranged according to strict parameters, which he then undermines so that the 106 variously assigned pages fill continuously with text, and then empty gradually after the only completely filled page in the middle is reached--producing a unique fading in and out of images. In German only."
