A Queneau me lo encontré en NY (1 de 2)

En un reciente viaje que realicé a la ciudad de Nueva York con la finalidad de visitar la Bienal del Whitney 2008 y la retrospectiva de Cai Guo-Qiang en el Guggenheim, me detuve en la Librairie de France, la cual se encuentra en el corazón del Rockefeller Center. La librería ha estado ahí desde 1935 y es la que cuenta con el mejor surtido de libros en francés en los Estados Unidos. Este lugar es también famoso por su vasto inventario de libros en español que se ubican en el sótano del recinto, junto a la sección de poesía en francés. Lamentablemente, después de 73 años, la librería cerrará sus puertas a finales del 2008 debido al alto costo de la renta que esta ubicación demanda. La he visitado alrededor de 5 o 6 veces, y temo que esta última visita ha sido, en verdad, la última. Así que algo grandioso tuvo que suceder.
Me encontré a Queneau en los anaqueles de la sección de literatura traducida al español. La alegría de la vida es un libro verdaderamente incoseguible en este idioma que la editorial Alfaguara publicó en 1984, ocho años después de la muerte del autor (por autor me refiero a Queneau, no al Autor que Barthes asesinó en 1967).
Resulta un poco extraño que hoy Queneau ni siquiera figure en la lista de autores del grupo Santillana, a pesar de que también le fue publicada su famosa Zazie dans le métro en 1978, la cual comenzaré a buscar como un poseso. El ejemplar de La alegría de la vida, en perfectas condiciones, aún se encontraba envuelto en papel celofán. Es de formato compacto, como el de los primeros títulos que la editorial le publicó a Cortázar. Hasta la fecha sólo tenía la versión traducida al inglés como The Sunday of Life, título que respeta íntegramente a su contraparte en francés, Le dimanche de la vie, que en español se traduce como El domingo de la vida y no La alegría de la vida, aunque en este caso las palabras alegría y domingo apelan al mismo significado.
En la próxima entrada escribiré sobre otro ejemplar que logré conseguir de Raymond Queneau, todavía más difícil de encontrar, y con una carátula para no creerse.

Otra vez Hirst (Novedad Booth-Clibborn)

En tan sólo 18 años (desde la aparición de The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, en 1991) el talentoso británico -enfant-terrible-bad-boy- Damien Hirst, ha logrado consolidarse como el artista contemporáneo de mayor renombre a nivel mundial. Año tras año ha conseguido reinventar sus técnicas artísticas aunque sin abandonar los tópicos que ya le son característicos: religión, muerte y enfermedad. En los últimos años Hirst ha explorado una vez más el tema de la muerte y la religión a través de una serie de piezas de gran formato que incluyen cientos de mariposas de diferentes especies dispuestas de manera caleidoscópica. La caja que vino de España (7 de 7)

Obabakoak es la más célebre de las novelas del escritor vasco Bernardo Atxaga, posiblemente el autor más famoso, junto con Unai Elorriaga y Ramón Saizarbitoria, en lengua euskera de las últimas décadas. Elorriaga, a pesar de ser el más joven de los tres, ha conseguido colocar sus tres novelas en diversos mercados, logrando con ello ampliar el panorama de la literatura euskadi entre jóvenes y mantener su lengua como protagonista no sólo en la literatura de su país, sino en el ámbito internacional. La lectura de Obabakoak me fue sugerida por un buen amigo quien hasta la fecha no ha fallado en recomendarme textos de gran calidad literaria. Espero que Obabakoak no sea la excepción.

La caja que vino de España (6 de 7)

Otro ejemplar, también de Fernando Royuela, que me llegó desde España es el libro de cuentos titulado El rombo de Michaelis, publicado por la editorial Alfaguara en el 2007. No me queda claro por qué los libros de Royuela son tan difíciles de conseguir fuera de España, probablemente tiene que ver con la editorial quien no le ha dado la difusión que la obra merece fuera de su país natal. De momento estoy tratando de conseguir otros dos de sus libros: Callejero de Judas y El prado de los monstruos, ambos publicados por la editorial Lengua de Trapo hacia finales de los noventas. He puesto la orden, el cargo ha sido realizado a mi tarjeta, pero me temo que muy pronto estaré recibiendo un correo electrónico diciendo algo en las líneas de: "Estimado cliente, lamentamos informarle que nos es imposible completar su transacción en este momento debido a que los libros que ha ordenado se encuentran agotados. Disculpe las molestias..." En fin, una razón más para obsesionarse con la obra de este autor madrileño. Después de todo, ¿qué no son los libros más difíciles de conseguir los que más disfruta uno? Es cierto que no siempre, pero me ha sucedido así en incontables ocasiones.

Fe de erratas (Novedad Ingvild Goetz)

El pasado día 3 de marzo publiqué una entrada con la que entonces creí la portada del nuevo libro sobre la obra del artista estadounidense Matthew Barney. El libro me llegó el pasado jueves y la portada es completamente distinta, aunque no menos genial. Las tapas se encuentran forradas con una especie de tela que le otorga a cada copia un sello autónomo y artesanal (click sobre la imagen para apreciar las imperfecciones de la superficie). El libro es de una manufactura excelente, cuenta con sendas imágenes que reproducen dibujos, esculturas, fotografías, instalaciones y stills de las obras cinematográficas de Barney. Se trata de una publicación bilingüe (alemán-inglés) de gran calidad que explora en su totalidad el ciclo The Cremaster, la obra maestra del artista, y la novena entrega de la serie Drawing Restraint, aunque de manera condensada y sin la grandiosidad (de contenido y tamaño) del catálogo publicado por el Guggenheim en el 2003 The Cremaster Cycle, para el que la curadora Nancy Spector escribió una serie de ensayos magníficos que revelan puntos fundamentales en la hermética obra del artista. Este ejemplar es, sin duda alguna, de carácter obligatorio para todos los admiradores de la infinitamente maravillosa obra de Barney.

La caja que vino de España (5 de 7)

El vuelo de Ícaro, del francés Raymond Queneau, es quizá la obra más difícil de categorizar en la ya de por sí inclasificable producción literaria de su autor. Y es que, como aseguran algunos críticos, este texto se trata de una novela escrita a manera de obra de teatro, con acotaciones, escenografía y dirección de escena pormenorizada. Otros, más conservadores, niegan el parentesco de la obra tanto con la novela como con el texto dramático. En resumen todo parece indicar que El vuelo de Ícaro es uno de los más endiablados juguetes del autor, su trampa más lúdica, un disfraz de noche de brujas en pleno verano. ¿Será?

A esta nueva novela le fue muy bien en las dos reseñas que aparecieron en el The New York Times la semana pasada, incluyendo la de la fiera Michiko Kakutani que, aunque un poco agridulce, resultó bastante favorecedora.

En fechas recientes el nombre de Fernando Royuela ha comenzado a aparacer con bastante frecuencia en algunas de las páginas que he estado visitando. Motivado por la curiosidad que despertaron en mí las sinopsis de sus libros de cuentos y novelas, decidí ordenar un par de ellos para descubrir a este autor a quien nunca antes había tenido la oportunidad de leer. La caja que vino de España (3 de 7)

En los anaqueles de mi biblioteca personal existe solamente uno libro que he comprado tres veces. Me refiero a Exercices de style (Ejercicios de estilo; Exercises in Style) del magnífico escritor francés Raymond Queneau, el miembro más destacado, junto con Perec, Calvino y Roubaud, del grupo literario francés OuLiPo (Ouvroir de littérature potentielle; Taller de literatura potencial), uno de los movimientos literarios más audaces del siglo XX y que continúa activo en el XXI, aunque el talento de sus miembros actuales, porque lo hay, difícilmente se compara a la genialidad de la obra generada por los autores antes citados (Roubaud aún vive). Ejercicios de estilo es un libro de aventuras, más no en el sentido popular del vocablo, sino de aventuras sintácticas, gramáticas y fonéticas que la obra ofrece, la cual está compuesta por una historia, bastante sencilla y amena, escrita de 99 maneras diferentes: en pretérito imperfecto, presente, verso libre, alejandrino, comedia, oda, tanka, anagrama, etc., etc.
La primera versión del libro que tuve la oportunidad de leer fue la versión traducida al inglés por Barbara Wright hace algunos ocho o nueve años. Luego, en la Virgin Records de París, conseguí la versión original de la que solamente he podido leer algunos cuantos pasajes, pues mi dominio de la lengua francesa es bastante lamentable, raquítico y, sobre todo, avergonzante. Aún así consideré de vital importancia poseer el libro en su idioma original. Hace algunos días me llegó la versión en español de Antonio Fernández Ferrer, publicada por Cátedra. Aún no la he leído, por lo que no puedo opinar sobre la calidad de la traducción (sólo espero que no se encuentre poblada de regionalismos).
A continuación publico los datos bibliográficos de las tres versiones. En vez de incluir la sinopsis, transcribiré la primera de las 99 variantes con la esperanza de despertar el interés de quien llegase a leer estas líneas.
La lectura de Queneau es, simplemente, o-bli-ga-to-ria.

De plácemes (Novedad Prestel)

Acaba de salir a la venta una monografía de la artista franco-estadounidense Louise Bourgeois enfocada únicamente en la serie de piezas que ella misma ha denominado como celdas (cells), en mi opinión su mejor y más interesante trabajo, en extremo icónico y autobiográfico. Las piezas, invariablemente, le otorgan al espectador un nivel de acceso, casi sin restricciones, a la vida íntima y personal de la artista. Con estas celdas Bourgeois consigue, de manera poderosa, obliterar el insidioso campo hermético que tanto pulula en el ambiente de la escena contemporánea y que caracteriza a tantos cientos de artistas quienes han elegido la vía de la autocensura como forma de expresión.

Otro libro que por fin pude conseguir en fechas recientes (después de no haberlo encontrado en la FIL 2006 y 2007 y un centenar de librerías) fue la edición definitiva de Gárgoris y Habidis. Una historia mágica de España, del autor madrileño Señor Don Fernando Sánchez Dragó, cuya severa petulancia y a veces deliciosa pedantería, deleita hasta al más ecuménico de los lectores. La edición cuenta con un prólogo ni nada más ni nada menos que del maestro Gonzálo Torrente Ballester, otra buena razón para adquirir este ejemplar.

Hoy se hizo pública la lista de los seis contendientes al premio Best of the Booker que este año celebra su cuadragésimo aniversario. Además del premio Booker 2008 que se entregará dentro de unos meses, un jurado ha seleccionado seis novelas que han resultado ganadoras en ediciones pasadas para elegir a la mejor que se ha premiado en la historia de este galardón. Sería una grosería que Disgrace, del sudafricano J. M. Coetzee no resultase como la triunfadora. A continuación la lista:

Novedad Fantagraphics

Resulta curioso que un escritor de la talla de Alexander Theroux haya elegido a Fantagraphics para publicar su primera novela en veinte años. Fantagraphics es una de las mejores casas editoriales de novelas gráficas y cómics, siempre publicando libros interesantes en este género. Mas su catálogo de Ficción se reduce apenas a media docena de títulos, razón por la que encuentro un poco extraño que Theroux les haya entregado su manuscrito; sería interesante investigar las razones detrás de ello. La novela salió al mercado el pasado mes de diciembre y le ha valido a su autor comparaciones con Joyce, Stern, Rabelais y Dostoyevksy, entre muchas otras grandes figuras de la literatura universal.
Esta mañana leí los primeros dos capítulos en una librería local y el texto me pareció impresionante, aunque creo que antes de leer por completo a Laura Warholic or, The Sexual Intellectual, me animaré a comenzar con Darconville's Cat, considerada como la obra maestra de Theroux.
Otros dos títulos más para agregar a esa enorme lista (creatura mutante y maravillosa) de libros por leer que, semana a semana, sigue expandiendo su infinita condición.

La caja que vino de España (1 de 7)

Ayer DHL me trajo una caja llena de libros que ordené en España. Me había sido imposible conseguirlos, tanto en librerías (de nuevo y de viejo), así como en diversos sitios de la red que frecuento. Quizá este primer ejemplar que publico lo hubiese podido conseguir dentro de poco en alguna mesa de importaciones, pero desde que el pasado 5 de abril René mencionó a este autor que hasta entonces me era completamente desconocido, me entró la curiosidad por leerlo. Nocilla Experience es la segunda entrega de una supuesta trilogía que comenzó hace varios años con Nocilla Dream y que concluirá dentro de algunos más con Nocilla Lab. El primero me lo acaba de conseguir una amiga que apenas regresó de la Ciudad de México. El que aquí aparece, como ya lo mencioné, me llegó el día de ayer junto con otros seis ejemplares que más tarde compartiré en la página. Aunque de momento me encuentro leyendo un librito de cuentos del autor mexicano José Emilio Pacheco, no pude dejar de ojear/hojear brevemente las páginas de Nocilla Experience, y aunque fue muy poco lo que me animé a leer parece que el texto promete. Mas su lectura deberá esperar algunas semanas. Desde hace tiempo me impuse un regla que obedezco con absoluta seriedad: De momento tengo en una lista alrededor de 600-700 libros que necesito leer, la regla consiste en que si deseo incluir un nuevo título no puedo hacerlo en las primeras diez posiciones, es decir, que tengo que leer por lo menos diez libros antes de comenzar con alguno de reciente adquisición. En muy raras ocasiones quebranto esta regla, el año pasado lo hice con Flying to America, de Donald Barthelme, y creo que este año sucederá lo mismo cuando aparezca el nuevo libro de David Sedaris el próximo mes, When You Are Engulfed in Flames. Para aprender un poco más sobre la Nocilla los invito a leer este texto que apareció en la página de René hace algunas semanas.

Me llega el lunes y la espera me resulta ridículamente agónica. Después de Bourgeois el mejor dibujante con vida, canadiense de nacimiento, fundador del Royal Art Lodge en el 2003, bestia híbrida entre Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (gran magnífico) y Henry Darger (genio sin paralelo). Incansable provocateur, el irreverente jovencito Marcel Dzama nos ofrece nuevas obras maestras. Pídelo ya, porque dentro de dos años el precio de uno de estos ejemplares será exorbitante, aunque absolutamente justificado.
